Strict behavioral science requires translation to reach a mainstream audience. I was hired to design a suite of hand-crafted illustrations to replace the clinical diagrams standard in non-fiction publishing. This approach grounds dense academic research in human warmth, making complex psychology both accessible and actionable for everyday parents.
Visualizing Abstract Concepts
We replaced standard clinical charts with approachable visual metaphors. This choice helps readers grasp complex behavioral psychology without feeling intimidated by the raw data.

Hunt, Gather, Parent takes an anthropological look at child-rearing. Dr. Michaeleen Doucleff spent time with Maya, Inuit, and Hadzabe families to observe how they raise helpful and autonomous kids. The illustrations needed to reflect this cultural immersion. I built the visual language around human connection and personal experience.
I used loose ink washes to capture the warmth of these families. This tactile approach roots the sociology in a tangible reality. The drawings function like field notes. They give readers a clear window into the specific parenting practices described in the text, showing kids integrated into adult life.
